Hurricane Ike

Some of you may have seen that Hurricane Ike came knocking on Houston’s door. On Thursday September 11th Liz was glued to the TV and I was glued to my computer both of us anxiously watching the projected path of Hurricane Ike. We were on the fence as weather to go or stay until the projected path was updated and showed Houston as taking a direct hit. Our neighborhood was projected to get 80-90 mph winds. Around 10:30 pm the truck was packed and we were on the road to Corpus Christi. From Corpus on Saturday morning we watched the eye of the hurricane pass right over our house. It wasn’t until Sunday that we were finally able to get a text message through to our neighbors and find out that our house was in one piece. The only damage being a broken fence and a toppled tree. Even with this news we still wanted to check the house for ourselves so we decided to head back home on Monday, but had found out that there was no electricity, a gas shortage, and grocery stores lacking the necessities. We went to the grocery store and got the essentials for us and our neighbors and got 24 extra gallons of gas for our neighbors, ourselves, and my parents. We got home Monday night and found the neighborhood in much worse shape than we had imagined, but luckily very few homes had been hit by falling trees.

As I write this the generator is chugging along in the driveway making things seem a little more like normal. Thankfully the weather has been very cooperative and the temperature has been bearable. So far 8 days without power. They are projecting that we will have it back on Thursday of next week. Let’s hope sooner.

Here is a picture looking down our street. This was after people had pulled the trees out of the road.

This is the main road out of our community. It was amazing to see so many power poles that were snapped in half just from the wind alone.

We had told Logan that we were going to Aunt Uly’s because a bad storm was coming. I don’t think he really understood until we came back and he saw all the “broken trees”. Logan’s quote, “Look Daddy, Ike broke those trees, I’m going to hit Ike back, and he needs to fix them.”

That's WILD! Glad your house is in one piece and the family is okay. Here's hoping you get power soon. Andres posted his story (he is in HOuston now, too) on operationlonestar.blogspot.com

Send me your current contact info when you get a chance.

Are your parents living in TX now?
